Holiday Season in Hillsdale, 2023 Edition

Community Events

SW Trails PDX Annual Thanksgiving Scone Walk, 9:30am on Thanksgiving morning: A tradition for more than 25 years, this year's walk honors the late Glenn Bridger. The self-led 2.2-mile walk starts and ends at the Hillsdale Food Park on SW Capitol Highway. At the midpoint of the walk, on SW Vincent Place cul-de-sac, scones, coffee, and tea will be hosted from 9:30-11:00am by neighborhood and trails activist Karen Bridger. Light Up Hillsdale: Local merchants have put up white lights throughout the business district to create a joyful and inviting atmosphere as the days get shorter.


The Portland Ballet Presents 'The Enchanted Toyshop': November 25-26, 1 and 4 pm. Lincoln Performance Hall at Portland State University, 1620 SW Park at Market. Click here for tickets.


Southwest Commnunity Band: Directed by Wells band teacher Nick Caldwell, this all-ages band will perform their Fall program in the Multnomah Arts Center Auditorium on Sunday, December 3, 6pm. Admission is free. Beverages and pizza will be available for purchase. Featuring brews by Zoiglhaus Brewing Company. Proceeds benefit the Wells student band. The current fundraising goal is $5,000 for new percussion equipment, of which $2,000 has already been raised. According to Kristin Rencher, Community Band Co-Founder and Executive Director, the chimes are "on their last legs" and date back to 1956 when the school first opened.

Wells Band Fall Concert: The Ida B. Wells-Barnett High School band department invites all to a free concert in the Wells Auditorium at 7pm on December 13. (This performance is dependent on resolution of the PPS teacher's strike by November 27.)


Shopping Opportunities

Golden Ticket: This year's Golden Ticket event kicks off on Friday, November 24. Participating merchants in Multnomah Village and Hillsdale will offer special deals through December 31 when you present your Golden Ticket. Participating Hillsdale businesses: Other Worlds Games & Comics, Paloma Clothing, Verde Cocina, Jacquline Fitzgibbon State Farm Insurance, The UPS Store Hillsdale, and Hoot-N-Annie Resale Boutique.


MJCC Art Sale: The MJCC teams up with ORA Northwest Jewish Artists Collective for their annual Hannukah Marketplace from November 26 - December 1 at the MJCC, 6651 SW Capitol Hwy. Marketplace hours are Sunday, 10:30am - 4:00pm; Monday-Thursday, 9:00am - 6:00pm; Friday, 9:00am -3:00 pm. Opening reception Sunday, November 26 at 3:00pm.


Ida B. Wells Booster Club Christmas Tree Sale: The Ida B. Wells Booster Club is holdings its annual Christmas tree and merch sale again this year at the Barbur Blvd A-Boy. All proceeds go to Wells High School sports and student clubs. The sale hours are Friday, 4-6pm, Saturday and Sunday, 10am-6pm, November 24-December 10.


Ida B. Flea Student Market: Shop vintage, curated, and handmade objects and support student creativity and entrepreneurship. December 13, 4-6pm at Ida B. Wells High School. Cash preferred.


Hillsdale Apparel on sale at Hoot-N-Annie Resale Boutique: T-shirts, sweatshirts, and onesies with the Hillsdale logo are on sale now. A portion of the proceeds benefits the Hillsdale Business and Professional Association and the Hillsdale Community Foundation.


Hillsdale Farmer's Market: Craft vendors have joined the Farmer's Market line-up with artisan jewelry, wooden carved bowls, spoons, and kitchen utensils, photography prints, wallets and bags, ceramic mugs, bowls, and ornaments. The Farmer's Market is now on its winter-time bi-weekly schedule, with markets on December 3 and 17.

Opportunities to Give

SW Outreach is a local team of volunteers working to support and find housing for the homeless in SW Portland. This holiday season the group is seeking donations that will allow them to continue to provide life-saving supplies and services such as tents, sleeping bags, cell phones, warm meals, clothing, regular outreach visits, bus passes, legal aid, transportation to medical care and more. Make a tax-deductible donation to SW Outreach with a check payable to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, with “SW Outreach” noted in the memo line and mailed to: St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 3228 SW Sunset Blvd, Portland, OR 97239. Or donate online at the donation site for St. Andrews Presbyterian Church by choosing SW Outreach from the dropdown menu. The Hillsdale Assistance Team (HAT) is a group of residents and business owners who seek to address issues of poverty in Hillsdale—like homelessness, hunger, and drug addiction—while working to maintain the appearance and character of our neighborhood. Funds raised by HAT have been granted to SW Outreach and have been used to help homeless students and their families at Hillsdale schools. Tax-deductible donations can be made at https://www.hillsdalecommunityfoundation.org/hat.


Neighborhood House's Partnership Campaign is underway now through December 31. Donations received will help families support basic needs this winter.
