[June 19, 2024]

I-5 Highway Closure, Sewer Repair Pause

Bridge Repair Work to Close I-5 in Both Directions June 28-July 1

Several I-5 on-ramps will be closed from 9pm Friday, June 28 to 5am Monday, July 1. Four miles of I-5 will be closed in both directions over the weekend to repair the bridge at SW 26th Ave.

I-5 closure map. Graphic: ODOT.
Highway closure:
  • Southbound I-5 will close between the SW Terwilliger Boulevard off-ramp and the SW Capitol Highway on-ramp.

  • Northbound I-5 will close between the SW Barbur Boulevard off-ramp and the SW Terwilliger Boulevard on-ramp.

Southbound on-ramp closures:
  • S Harbor Drive.

  • Interstate 405 southbound exchange to southbound I-5.

Northbound on-ramp closures:
  • SW Spring Garden Street.

  • SW Capitol Highway.

  • OR99W/SW Barbur Boulevard.

  • SW Haines Street.

  • Kruse Way.

SW 26th Ave had been closed but reopened to vehicles under I-5 on May 1. It will close again during the weekend I-5 is closed (June 28 – July 1).

During the closure, regional detours will use I-205, U.S. 26, I-405 and OR 217. A signed local detour will use SW Barbur Boulevard. This detour maintains local access. Congestion is to be expected during the I-5 weekend closure.

This Oregon Department of Transportation project will improve the I-5 bridge over SW 26th Ave in Southwest Portland with a new structure and upgrade SW 26th Ave with better lighting, bike lanes, and sidewalks. ODOT says this project is necessary to replace a worn-out bridge structure on I-5, bring it up to current seismic standards, and ensure continued reliability for travelers.

Hillsdale Sewer Repair Projects on Hold

The city of Portland Bureau of Environmental Services has paused work on all three sewer repair projects in Hillsdale. The reason, according to the BES website, is "funding challenges."

Work was originally scheduled for completion in 2024. Start of construction has now been delayed until at least 2025.
