SW Trails August Hikes

[Posted July 16, 2021]

SW Trails Neighborhood Hikes are back in full swing. Our June and July hikes were a huge success. We were all so happy to see one another again and welcome new walkers.

If there is a trail in SW Portland that you love, SW Trails probably helped establish and maintain it. We are completely volunteer based. If you’d like to participate in trail work, get more information, donate or become a member visit swtrails.org or contact walks@swtrails.org.

On group hikes an experienced guide will help you discover the hidden parks and secret cut-throughs that wind through Portland’s southwest neighborhoods.

2nd Saturday Hikes are usually 5-7 miles in length with elevation ups and downs at a 2.5-3 mph pace. Challenging! If you have doubts if a hike of this length and pace is right for you then try out Stroll and Coffee which is a shorter 2-3 mile walk with gentler hills, a bit slower pace at about 2.0 mph with an optional coffee stop at the end.

Please be aware that we follow state guidelines regarding COVID safety protocols. Bring a snack, water, good footwear, sunglasses, and dress for the weather. Kids and well-behaved dogs on leash are welcome. For health reasons, there is no smoking on SWTrails walks.

August 14, SW Trails 2nd Saturday Hike

Start time: 9:00 am

Name: Gabriel/Woods/April Hill Parks Neighborhood: Multnomah Village, Ashcreek and Maplewood Distance: 5.5 miles Elevation Change: 700 feet Start/End Location: Smith School, 8935 SW 52nd Ave, Portland

This hike connects three neighborhood parks, Gabriel, Woods Memorial and April Hill, all with wooded or natural area trails. The trails between the parks use mostly side streets, sections of SW Trails #3 and #7, and some connecting trails. The hike follows the route outlined as Self-Guided Hike #12 on our website but starts and ends at the suggested alternate point near Smith School where 52nd Ave has lots of on-street parking.

August 28, Saturday

Stroll and Coffee

So as not to conflict with this year's Multnomah Days event on August 21st, this month's Saturday Stroll and Coffee will meet on August 28th (the fourth Saturday, instead of the third Saturday).

Start time: 9:00 am Distance: 2.5 miles Start/End Location: Hillsdale food carts near Ida B. Wells High School, 6238 SW Capitol Hwy

We will explore parts of the Terwilliger Trail, share information about the Totem Pole at Elk Point (by the Chart House) and view remnants of the Red Electric tram track bed which is slated to become The Red Electric Trail. See our website for more details.
