As of May 2, the SW Portland Tool Library can be found in its new location at Greater Portland Bible Church, 2374 SW Vermont St.
Tool library founder Jason Bergstrom still hopes to find a “bricks and mortar” home for the non-profit, which could use more space for its large collection. “We have about 1,050 tools and turn away up to a dozen tool donations every month due to lack of space,” Bergstrom said.
For now, the new location offers better accessibility and parking, and a partnership with the church that includes free rent.
Tyler Michel, the church’s lead pastor, said the decision to host the tool library grew out of a desire to help the community thrive and aligned with the church’s mission of serving neighbors. “From a Christian perspective, we see using some of our space for a tool library as an opportunity to better love our neighbors,” he said.
Tool library hours coincide with those of the church’s food pantry, and Michel said he hopes the church property will serve as a community resource hub on Saturdays.
